Rajbhandary, Sherpa win honors at Everest Marathon

Ram Kumar Rajbhandary and Ang Dami Sherpa have won the men’s and women’s race in the 11th Tenzing-Hillary Everest Marathon held in the Everest Region on May 29.

Rajbhandary won the race in 3 hours 59 minutes and 45 seconds, while Ang Dami, who is a grandma of 1, mother of three and three-month pregnant, finished the race in 6 hours, two minutes and 10 seconds.

Likewise, DB Kulung Rai has become the first runner up with a timing of 4 hours 11 minutes and 5 seconds and Tirtha Tamang clinched the third position title by crossing the line in 4 hours 12 minutes and 9 seconds.

In the women’s race, Mani Kala Rai and Tara Ketner of USA finished the race in 6 hours 15 minutes 20 seconds and 7 hours 28 minutes 10 seconds, respectively.

The top three finishers in men’s category received cash prize of Rs 100,000, Rs 75,000 and Rs 50,000, respectively. Similarly, winners, runners-up and third position holders in the women’s category became richer by Rs 50,000, Rs 20,000 and Rs 10,000, respectively.

Altogether 105 runners from 20 different countries participated in the highest marathon in the world.

Bishnu Bahadur Rana, an Indian Army soldier of Nepali origin, secured first position in the foreigners´ category with the timing of 6 hours 1 minute 10 seconds. Similarly, Gerrit Voortman of the Netherlands (6 hours 18 minutes 47 seconds) and Mahabir Singh of India (6hours 30 minutes and 7 seconds) finished second and third position, respectively.

The marathon started from the Everest Base Camp (5,365m) and passed through Gorak Shep (5,160), Lobuche (4,928), Thukla (4,611), Bibre (4,492), Pyangboche (3,995), Thyangboche (3,890), Lobisasa (3,495), Kangjuma (3,592) and Chorten (3,560) before concluding at Namche Bazaar (3,465).
