TAAN organized 3rd TAAN International Langtang Marathon 2018 in Langtang region on May 19 with the slogan “Adventure Sports for Sustainable Tourism”. The event successfully disseminated the message that Nepal as an international destination for sports and sporting events. The marathon has helped to promote Nepal with Langtang in particular as one of the major destinations for adventure tourism among both international and national tourists through mass media.
In the Chairmanship of TAAN President Nava Raj Dahal, the marathon was inaugurated by the Chief Guest Honb'l Minister of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Rabindra Adhikari. The 42.195 kilometers full marathon started from Kyanjin Gompa (3,870 m) and went through Godha Tabela, Lama Hotel, Rimche, Sherpagaon, Khangjim before concluding at Syabrubensi.
The closing ceremony was held in the chairmanship of TAAN First Vice- President Jeeban Thapa Magar and the Chief guest was Mohan Acharya, Member of House of Representative.
A total of 100 participants took part at the event where 95 were Nepali Citizens and 5 were foreigners. In the men’s category, Khagendra Bhatt from Nepal Army won first with 3 hours 49 minutes and 27 seconds. Trailing behind in second was Bharat Khatri from Nepal Army with 4 hours 6 minutes and 18 seconds while Subas Karki secured third with 4 hours 7 minutes and 58 seconds.
Similarly, in the women’s category, Nirkala Kulung Rai from Solukhumbu took home the title after clocking 4 hours 57 minutes and 13 seconds to clinch gold. Finishing behind her Purna Maya Rai from Solukhumbu won in second place with 5 hours 26 minutes and 19 seconds and Sarita Basi from Nepal Army gained third position with 5 hours 52 minutes and 20 seconds.
TAAN handed award over to the participants with the cheque amount of Rs. 105,000/-, Rs. 78,750/- and 52,500/- with the certificate and medal to the winners, 1st runner-up and 2nd runner-up from both male and female category respectively.
Honb'l MoCTCA Adhikari expressed his gratitude towards TAAN for organizing the event and giving continuity for the three years that has brought a positive impact on tourism of Nepal and Langtang in particular. "After the massive earthquake of 2015, tourism of Langtang region was adversely affected but after the initiation taken by TAAN organizing International Langtang Marathon, the Langtang valley has received maximum number of tourist". Tourism industry being a source to achieve prosperity of the country, he highlighted upon coordination among local people and business houses.
TAAN First vice- President Thapa argued on promoting adventure tourism. "Nepal not only being popular for trekking but has best adventure destination that must be traveled once in a life time" stating, he quoted that TAAN is aiming to promote Nepal as one of the best adventure sport destination and assured that will organize such kinds of event in near future as well.
Member of House of Representative Acharya acknowledged TAAN for organizing International Langtang Marathon. He expressed that this marathon will promote Langtang Region as an adventure sport destination through national and international medias and will help to increase the flow of tourist.
Concluding the ceremony, Sports & Event Management Coordinator Ritu Gyamdan thanked all the supporters and participants for successfully concluding the event stated that third edition of TAAN International Langtang Marathon will surge maximum numbers of domestic as well as international tourist in the region.
The event was hosted by TAAN Executive Member Rajan Prashad Kapri.
