Trekking Agencies' Association of Nepal (TAAN) organized an interaction program on "Role of Honorary Consuls in Tourism" in Kathmandu on 27 August, 2018.
Mr. Krishna Man Shrestha, coordinator of International Relation Department - TAAN, welcomed all the honorary consuls and consul office representatives attending the program. "The role of honorary consuls is expected more active to present Nepal and its tourism products in international arena. The joint effort of TAAN and Honorary Consular Corps Nepal (HCC-N) helps to increase the number of tourist visiting Nepal in future ", he said.
Speaking in the program, Mr. Rajendra Kumar Khetan, - Dean HCC-N and Honorary Consul for Portugal, thanked TAAN for taking this initiative for the promotion of Nepal's tourism. "Since, Honorary consuls are the distinguished entrepreneurs, Honorary Consular Corps. Nepal (HCCN) can jointly make strategic plan for bilateral and multilateral relations for cultural exchange and tourism promotion through media, schools and university of respective countries", he said. "European Union has a plan to convert aid into trade by promoting investment in Nepal. The tourism industry of Nepal is in need for more investment to compete with other neighboring and similar tourism market. Honorary consuls have been playing role in releasing the positive travel advisories by respective countries. Similar interactions and joint meeting in coming days will help us to make better future plan", he added.
Mr. Ang Tshering Sherpa – Honorable Consul for Belgium highlighted the historical trend of Belgian tourist in Nepal. "When the situation of Nepal is chaotic and travel advisories try to be negative, our role is important to make them positive. Tourism is the biggest and fastest growing industry in the world with significant role in economic growth of nation. Nepal has tremendous potential of several tourism products to increasing national economy, foreign currency earning and maintain regional balance. The role of honorary consuls is to specially maintain bilateral relation, cultural exchange and tourism promotion. Belgium, being the capital of European Union has vital role in the union", he said.
Similarly Mr. Sriram Lamichhane, Honorary consul for Luxemberg, Mr. Dinesh Shrestha, Honorary Consul for Malta and Mr. Basnata Raj Mishra, honorary consul for Chile put their voices and highlighted the role of consul for the multilateral cooperation for Nepal's tourism development and promotion.
Concluding the interaction program, TAAN president Mr. Chandra Rijal said, "Our active role for promotion of Nepal's tourism and spreading message to all the countries will prove our existence". We all stakeholders should positively act for better productivity and holistic economic development of Nepal, he added.
Similarly, Mr. Karna B Lama requested the HCC-N to invite TAAN and tourism stakeholders in the meeting they convene. Furthermore, he proposed them to form a separate tourism committee to leverage more opportunities to the nation.
Speaking to the journalists, Mr. Surya Bahadur Ghimire, the media coordinator of TAAN said that the program has added a milestone in exploring newer dimensions for prosperous tourism in Nepal. He further said that the policies are to be framed with a view to harnessing maximum potential to nation from all channels of both home and abroad.
TAAN CEO Mr. Tek Bahadur Mahat, the emcee of the event, lauded the attempts made by honorary consuls in various countries to promote tourism and called for multilateral efforts to explore more opportunities drawing global attention towards Nepal by maximizing every opportunities through HCC-N'.
The interaction program was chaired by Mr. Chandra Prasad Rijal, President of TAAN.

TAAN executive committee members, tourism entrepreneurs, tourism journalists among others were present at the programme.
