‘Guerrilla Trek’ unveiled

In a bid to promote war tourism, Nepal Tourism Board
(NTB) and Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN) and Rukum District
Development Committee have unveiled ‘Guerrilla Trek’.
UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, who led
decade-long insurgency, unveiled trekking map and guide book of the trek amid a
function on October 2.
The 27-trek has been divided into three segments and the
shortest segment can be trekking within a week. The trek, which lies in and around
Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve, can be started either from Beni of Myagdi,
Chaurjahari of Rukum or Holeri of Rolpa. The trek encompasses rural areas in
Myagdi and Baglung and western development region and Rukum and Rolpa in
mid-western development region.
“Although there are a few hotels and loges along the
route, most of the trekking companies offer camping trek. Locals have also
arranged home stay facility for trekkers,” TAAN General Secretary Mohan Lamsal
said.
The Guerrilla Trek offers a journey through heartland of
post-conflict territory. While on the trek, trekkers can see many caves were
rebels hid during insurgency. There are also number of waterfalls and beautiful
lakes along the trek. The trek also offers beautiful views of peaks in
Dhaulagiri Range.
“Natural resources, bio-diversity and rich culture of
ethnic groups are the major attraction of the trail,” Alonzo Lyons, the author
of The Guerrilla Trek Guide Book, said.
Speaking at the program, Dahal said the trek could be a unique
tourism product. “Political revolution becomes successful only if it triggers
economic revolution,” Dahal said, adding that the trek would of historical
significance for the new generation.
