Pokhara all set to hold Paragliding Championships
February 09 , 2006
The tourist hub city of Pokhara is all set to hold the 7th Nepal Open Paragliding Championships that will commence on 19 January 2006. The five-day long event comprises three categories of competition. More than 100 competitors from different parts of the world will be participating in the event.
This was disclosed by the TAAN Western Regional Chapter Pokhara at a press conference organised in Kathmandu on January 9, 2006.
Addressing the press conference organised by the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB), Mr. Tikaram Sapkota, coordinator of the Main Organising Committee, said that necessary preparations for organising the event have been made.
Mr. Sapkota also informed that a considerable number of international audiences would also be coming to Pokhara to watch the adventure event.
The championship will help in opening new avenues for the promotion of Himalayan adventure and will offer a powerful message to the receptive audience concerning the imminent extinction of three vulture species. With populations of these indigenous species decreasing by over 97% in the Himalayas in the last 15 years, a multitude of paragliding pilots will join hands in support for their feathered friends.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Bashu Dev Parajuli, President of TAAN Western Regional Chapter Pokhara, said several world-famous paragliding champions have also been invited to Pokhara for the event.
With the theme of 'Save Our Soarers", the event aims to encapsulate the urgency of the vulture crisis. The event is expected to contribute to the protection of these endangered vulture species by highlighting the plight of the magnificent creatures. Vultures play a vital role in our ecosystem by rapidly disposing of discarded carcasses that would otherwise pose a risk of disease.
As Pokhara and the surrounding area has remained one of the five world's excellent areas for paragliding, we are planning to organise a Paragliding World Cup in the near future. This year's event is being organised by TAAN Western Regional Chapter Pokhara, in cooperation with Nepal Air Sports Association (NAA). The event is being promoted by Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) and supported by Trekking Agents Association of Nepal (TAAN) Centre, Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA), Royal Nepal Airlines Corporation (RNAC), Pokhara Sub-Metropolitan City, Pokhara Tourism Council and its associates, Bird Conservation Nepal (BCN) and Busy Bee Cafe, Lakeside. Everest Beer is the sponsor, while Hotel Barahi, Lakeside, is official hotel for the event.
